FELLOWSHIP AT HARVARD
ACADEMIC YEAR FOR N.Z. JOURNALIST
Under an arrangement made by Harvard College and Carnegie Corporation of New York, a fellowship is being offered this year to give a New Zealand newspaperman an academic year of residence and study at Harvard in association with the 12 Nieman Fellows selected from United States papers and two other “associate” fellows from Australia and Canada, respectively. Nieman Fellowships provide an opportunity for journalists to add to their background for newspaper work by an academic year of university residence during which they have complete freedom to pursue studies of their own choice.
The Associate Nieman Fellowship will carry a stipend designed to cover university tiution charges and all living expenses in the United States for a single fellow or married fellow and wife for approximately nine months. It will provide as well for the fellow’s travel expense (by air, if necessary) from New Zealand to Cambridge. Massachusetts, and return and for up to two months’ additional travel in the US for professional purposes during and following the academic • ,, ear. A married fellow will be given a substantial allowance towards his wife’s travel to and from the U;S. a New Zealand journalists with at least six years’ experience and under 40 years of age are eligible to apply. Applications should include samples of the candidate’s work, a full statement of his or her experience, and a tentative plan of study. Evidence must be presented assuring full support of the employing paper and leave of absence of approximately 11 months, beginning m midySeptember. 1955.
