N.Z. JUMPING TEAM

TRAINING SQUAD TO BEGIN WORK SOON

The 11 riders and horses chosen by the New Zealand Horse Society to train at Rotorua for the final selection of a New Zealand jumping team of five, to go to the Royal Sydney Easter Show, will start work on February 24. The coach will be Mr C. Bolger, who trained the New Zealand team which competed at Sydney in 1953. The team will be announced on Sunday, March 6, after a demonstration of jumping at the Rotorua showgrounds.

The training squad will include only one South Island rider and horse, Mr E. G. O. Rutherford and Killarney. Among the other riders to train are Messrs A. White and P. Holden, both of Hawke’s Bay, who were members of the 1953 team. Two horses from the 1953 team, Hopalong and Rum, will also be trained. Hopalong will be ridden by Mr White and Rum by Mr Holden. In the team’s jumping contest at the Royal Easter Show of 1953, Rum, ridden by Miss Heather Swarbrick, of Morrinsville, put up the best individual performance.
