HEALING THROUGH PRAYER

Christian Science Lecture

DR. A. CAREY SPEAKS IN CHRISTCHURCH

The greatest power in the world is God’s love for man, Dr. Archibald Carey, of Detroit, Michigan, told an audience in Christchurch yesterday. “Through prayer, God’s love—spiritually understood and put into practice in daily life—heals not only sin, but disease, lack, and all inharmony,” said Dr. Carey. On a national tour as a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship, Dr. Carey spoke under the auspices of First Church of Christ, Scientist, in the Civic Theatre on “Christian Science: How Scientific Prayer can Help You.” Dr. Carey said that prayer that healed was available to all. However, to the Christian Scientist, prayer must be based squarely on the spiritual facts and laws concerning God and man, rather than on blind faith in the supernatural or miraculous. “Jesus healed the sick, raised the dead, fed the multitudes, stilled the storm, with the power which He received from God in prayer,” said Dr. Carey. “Through this same power of scientific prayer, Christian Science is today healing sickness, raising the dying to health, replacing lack with abundance, changing natural phenomena, bringing peace and happiness.” Dr. Carey explained healing Christian Science by describing its teachings as the application to Christianity of the scientific method which looks for facts and laws instead of emphasising the supernatural or miraculous. Mary Baker Eddy “discovered the divine laws that Jesus had used apd the methods of practically applying them to human needs.” Science and Religion Dr. Carey said he saw no reason for conflict between science and religion. “If science is based upon an honest search for truth, if religion deals with the truth about God and man, why should there be any conflict between them,” he said. “If the goal of science is an understanding of facts and laws, and if Christianity is setting forth the facts about the nature of God, why should not science and Christianity be one? And why should not a scientific understanding of the laws’ of God enable us to make use of these laws in prayer, as they were used by Jesus and His apostles? “Such an understanding of prayer has unlimited potentialities for improving human affairs in all fields of endeavour, including relations between nations, as well as in the natural sciences and in business. As the statesmen of the world more consciously accept God’s guidance and make more effective use of scientific prayer, we shall find the justice of principle and the tender helpfulness of divine love bringing peace and security and progress to each individual and to all mankind.

“As those who are engaged in the scientific research of natural science develop their breadth of vision and their depth of discernment and penetration through scientific prayer, how the barriers of materiality, the limitations of time and space, will yield to the unlimited freedom that God gives to His children! “As those in the business world are governed by God through scientific prayer, how the brotherhood of God’s children will find expression in respect for the freedom of individual progress!”

Dr. Carey will give another lecture in the series on Tuesday evening.
