ATHLETICS RECORD FOR 5000 METRES

Chris Chataway’s Time Beaten RUN BY RUSSIAN IN PRAGUE (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CRec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, October 23. Vladimir Kuc, Russia’s European champion, regained the world 5000 metres record from Christ Chmataway, of Britain, by beating Emil Zatopek (Czechoslovakia) in Prague today, in 13min 51.2 sec, according to Ceteka, the Czech news agency. (The. correct spelling of the Russian s name isKuc, not Kutz as was previously used.) Chataway clocked 13min 51.6 sec in his dramatic victory over Kuc at London’s White City on Wednesday, October 13, knocking ssec off the Russian’s previous world record, set during the European games in Berne last August. Kuc, who finished almost half a minute ahead of Zatopek in today’s race, also broke his own world three miles record, being timed at that distance in 13min 26.45ec. The Russian’s previous three miles time was 13min 27sec, set when leading Chataway at that stage in the White City race. Zatopek, winner of the 5000 metres, 10,000 metres, and marathon at the 1952 Olympic Games, was about half a lap behind Kuc today, and finished in 14min 19sec. The race was the highlight of the international meeting between Russia and Czechoslovakia in the Trahov Stadium, Prague. Chris Chataway exclaimed “Good heavens!” when told that his 10-day-old 5000 metres world record had been broken. *‘l always thought that the record would go again, but I thought it was late in the year for this sort of thing,” he said.
