Show At Rangiora Attracts Big Entries And Record Attendance

In many respects the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show, held at Rangiora on Saturday, was one of the most successful in the association’s long history. Entries at 1808—more than 200 in excess of last year’s—were only 13 short of the record set up in 1950. The horses were particularly outstanding. When the grand parade formed up in front of the grandstand the horse parade extended from one end of the field to the other. More than 120 exhibitors made 693 entries in the horse sections—by far the biggest entry in this department since the first Rangiora show was held in 1866. The show was held in warm, dull weather, and in spite of competition from the Motukarara races, the attendance was a record. Gate takings, at £454 18s. were well in excess of the previous best—£3BB two years ago. There was a bigger representation of sheep than last year, and the association had to put up extra pens to accommodate the fat lambs, but competition in some of the breeds was strictly limited. The Southdowns were the dominant breed, and th* judges—Messrs R. J. Low and J. S. Brooks—found much to commend and a little to criticise in the sheep that were placed before them. Championship honours were shared by J. Petrie and H. H. Petrie. Corriedales were also well represented, and Mr O. G. Evans, who judged them, found the standard good for a country show. In the main the sheep were well brought out, and appeared to have prospered in the recent dry weather, but some observers thought the lambs had started to slip back in the last fortnight because of the prolonged dry spell. Comment on Lambs Mr W. Smellie, who judged the lambs, said that from the high standard of the section it was evident that farmers were interested in producing the class of lamb that made the most popular meat for home consumption, which was essential now that they would be competing on an open market. The breeds in favour were those that were early maturing and gave a compact, neat frame. The lambs before him were mainly neat and symetrical, with bodies set squarely on short legs.

In the bigger cattle sections the judges were favourably impressed with the cattie. ‘* l was agreeably surprised with the section—it was quite up to metropolitan standards,” said the Friesian judge (Mr K. Fairbrother, of Wairarapa). The champion cow, exhibited by M. Leslie, and the reserve champion, from C. W. Humm and Sons, were both of top class, and would be well placed in any competition. “An excellent exhibition, which goes to show that the Shorthorn is on the upward trend,” said Mr A. G. Murphy, of Invercargill, reviewing the Milking Shorthorn entry. He commended the title-winning entries from G. G. Goodwin and M. A. Peach.

Last year, after Jersey breeders had decided to boycott the show because of the association's requirement that all cattle over six months old should be tested for tuberculosis, the cattle from only one Jersey breeder were entered. On Saturday the section had recovered slightly, with entries from five breeders. Throughout the day keen interest was taken in the strongly supported horse events held in the main ring. Mr H. Elworthy, of Craigmore, who judged the saddle horses and cobs, found, as was to be expected at the beginning of a new show season, that the hacks, with one or two exceptions, were short of schooling. In the hunting events the hardness of the ground limited freedom of jumping, but the standard of performance was good.
