Brahman Wins For Third Time At Oamaru Meetins

Brahman won his third race for the reason when he led over the last mile and three furlongs in the George Bruce Memorial Handicap, the main ra ce and first leg of the double on the first day of the Oamaru Trotting Club’s spring meeting on Saturday. He began slowly but safely from the outside of the horses on 12 yards, and once he took over the running from his stablemate, Loraine, he was never seriously challenged, and he won with something in hand from Loraine.

It was a most impressive effort by this four-year-old son of Gold Ear and Haughty, which is trained by C S Donald at Belfast for his breeder’ Mr B. Grice. In his three wins this season. Brahman has started from the outside of the field. He appears to be gaining confidence with every run and should soon reach a tight mark. In a pool of 46.644 5s tickets on the first leg of the double, 11,313 were invested on the Brahman bracket. Of these, 1235 were reinvested on Surfman. winner of the second leg, the Tapui Handicap, the combination returning £27 16s for £l. R. Young, who injured an arm last week, had a change of luck when two members of his team. Surfman and Cembala. gained decisive wins in their races. Surfman was driven by M. Holmes, who had won races earlier in the day with members of his own team, Recruit and Adan. One of the best efforts during the day was that of Vapour Trail, which led throughout in the Weston Handicap. The Light Brigade four-year-old won very easily from Invicta and Luminous, and he should complete a double for the meeting today in the Farewell Handicap. The meeting was held in fine but windy weather before a fair attendance. The track was hard and fast. Totalisator investments for the day amounted to £37,295 15s, compared with £38,967 last year.

Bracket First and Second Brahman and Loraine, both members of C. S. Donald's team, finished first and second in the George Bruce Memorial Handicap. Loraine was the early leader, but at the end of furlongs Brahman went to the front. There was little change in the running to the straight, where Brahman appeared to be pacing well within himself ahead of Loraine, Straight Eight, Young Sam, Esq ’re, Sedate, Silver Circle. Macall, Midday, and King's Order. Brahman was clear inside the furlong, and never looked likely to be caught. He had an advantage of three lengths at the post. Loraine ran 1 .- best race for a long time to take second place. She ran on much better than in her previous races this season, and may soon win. Young Sam, which had followed Silver Circle through from the half-mile post, finished strongly for third, half a length behind Loraine and two lengths in front of Midday, which did well to finish so close up after breaking and losing almost 72 yards at the start. Straight Eight and Esquire were almost in line with Midday, ahead of Silver Circle and Macall, with Sedate and King's Order following. Frigate broke badly at the start, Red Anthony colliding with her and losing his driver, F. Oliver, who made a fine recovery to pull the horse up before the end of a furlong. Silver Circle was also slow.

Sprint to Vapour Trail Vapour Trail, which had been badly checked in his race at Forbury Park the previous Saturday, led throughout in the Weston Handicap, and at no stage of the final furlong did he look likely to be caught. A number of runners broke at the start, and True Friend lost his driver. Vapour Trail began best and set a sound pace. After passing the half-mile post Vapour Trail, Sure Terra, Invicta, Kingsdown Grattan, and Luminous drew clear of the others. Sure Terra was almost on terms with Vapour Trail at the straight entrance, with Invicta and Kingsdown Grattan together next, two lengths in front of Luminous, with three lengths to Merry Gold. Vapour Trail ran right away over the final furlong to win easily.

Invicta, which had begun smartly from 12 yards and had a good run through on the inside all the way, finished well for second, ahead of Luminous, which made up grour J . Roving Gypsy, which had been towards the rear of the field until the last half-mile, finished strongly to cut Sure Terra out of fourth place. Kingsdown Grattan di . not run on as well as expected and finished sixth, ahead of La Fey, which lost ground early. Master Tony and Merry Gold headed the others. Cembala Wins Cembala, after racing in the middle of the field until the final half-mile, finished too well for the backmarher, Stadium Chief, to win the October Handicap. None of the drivers was keen to set the pace, and during various stages of the race the field was Loing little better than half pace. Crown Jewel made most of the pace, but with just over two furlongs to run Terowie took over, to turn for home ahead of Cembala, which had moved up. smartly over the previous furlong. Crown Jewel, Stadium Chief (wide out). Direct Hall, Mighty King, and Captain King. Cembala took the measure of Terowie at the furlong, and he was then challenged by Stadium Chief, which just failed to catch Stadium Chief, after meeting several checks in the running, did well to finish so close up. The next time he is favourably placed in the handicaps he should win. Direct Hall, which had been near the rear of the field at the half-mile post, finished strongly for third, ahead of Captain King, which also made up ground. Golden Marino was right up fifth, ahead of Sandy River. Mighty King, Terowie, and Crown Jewel. Signet Ring broke at the start and was checked three times in the running. Full Shot broke at the start and again in the running. Second Leg to Surfman Surfman. a member of R. Young’s team, outstayed his 10 opponents in the Tapui Handicap. He was always handily placed on the rails, ji st behind Titania and Bobby Brigade, although he drifted slightly in the middle stages of the race. Titania took over the running at the end of three furlongs, and she set a sound pace. She was still in front at the straight entrance, where Bobby Brigade, Dalise, Surfman (rails), New Idea, and Star Beam were handiest of the others. Bobby Brigade and Titania were fighting out the finish at the furlong, and then Surfman joined in. The latter was in front half a furlong from the finish, and he won wefi. Bobby Brigade, which had every chance, battled on for second, ahead of Titania, Which also ran on. Star Beam, which met trouble in the early stages of the race, made up ground over the last half-mile for fourth, without ever looking likely to be placed. Victory Nelson was right up next, clear of Dalise and New Idea. TAKE IN RESULTS— Results:— WELCOME HANDICAP, of £290; trotters; 4min class; one mile and five furlongs.—3, 3 J.
