CURRENT NOTES

Mrs David Crozier, of Fendalton, well known in Canterbury for her knowledge qf horticulture, was the guest of members of the Christchurch Beautifying Association at an evening party recently. The president (Mr H. Tillman) congratulated Mr§ Crozier on being awarded the fellowship of the Royal Institute of Horticulture of New Zealand. She was presented with a spray of flowers by the secretary (Miss Betty Hart). Mr M. J. Barnett, Director of Parks and Reserves, spoke on the propagating of trees. Mr John Taylor screened slides of his overseas visit.

Miss Gillian Quentin-Baxter, a graduate of Canterbury University College, has been awarded a scholarship given by the Federated Universities of Western Germany to a New Zealand student, and will leave Wellington by the Ruahine on August £5 on her way to Bonn. There she will attend the university for a year and will study philosophy. Miss Quentin-Baxter is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs R. H. Quentin-Baxter, Garden road.

Mrs T. F. M. Gibson (Fendalton), who has been visiting her father in Melbourne, returned to Christchurch on Wednesday.

Miss Prudence Tobin.* daughter of Mr and Mrs J. O’Hara Tobin, Papanui road, will leave Wellington by the Ruahine «n August 25 for London on her way to St. Etienne, France, where she will spend a year on the staff of a college. Miss Tobin, who graduated Master of Arts with first-class honours in French at Canterbury University College, and who has been on the staff of Craighead School, Timaru, has had her new position arranged by the French legation. She hopes to meet in England her brother. Mr John Tobin, who has just completed his course at Greenwich Naval College. Her mother will go to Wellington to see her off. . The use of cloches for home gardens was demonstrated by Mr Coombeof the Department of Agriculture at the August meeting of the Little River Garden Club- Mrs Roger Webb presided. The winners of the monthly competitions judged by Mr Coombe were as follows: of five blooms in a trough: Mrs A. E. Birdling 1, Mrs J. G. Lewthwaite 2, Mrs A. Grant 3; item of hyacinth: Mrs Davidson 1, Mrs D. Stewart 2; one parsnip and one carrot: Mrs Davidson 1, Mrs Webb 2, Mrs L. Radford 3: small bloom: Mrs Davidson 1, Mrs Webb 2, Mrs Patterson 3; large bloom: Mrs Patterson 1, Mrs de Pass 2, Mrs Webb 3. The hostesses were Mesdames E. E. Patten, J. G. Lewthwaite, L. Collins and E. Downs. The musical programme at an afternoon social of the women’s section of the Christchurch Returned Services’ Association was arranged by Mrs J. H. Cocks. It included songs by Miss Heather Smith and Miss fdargaret Smith, for whom Mrs Cocks was the accompanist. Mrs H- A. Bishop presided. Competitions were won by Mrs A. Maclachlan, Mrs Ambridge, Mrs Wilkinson, Mrs Emmerson and Mrs K. Brown. The Rev. Father J. Meagher, S.J., recter of the Minor Seminary, Riccarton, gave an informative address on the Liturgy of the Church at a meeting of members of the Catholic Women’s League at “Maryknoll,” Cashel street. The president of the league (Mrs R. Lattimore) presided.

Mrs E. H. Green presided at the August meeting of the Lyttelton branch of the Plynket Society. Final arrangements were made for the annual street day appeal next month. The nurse’s report for July was as fol-lows:—-birth notifications: Lyttelton 7, Diamond Harbour !• visits of badies to rooms: Lyttelton 62. Governor’s Bay 11, Diamond Harbour 4; visits to homes to babies: Lyttelton 27, Governor’s Bay 2, Diamond Harbour 2; visits of preschool children to rooms: Lyttelton 22, Governor’s Bay 1; new baby cases 7; number of badies under supervision at the end of the month: Lyttelton 12. Mrs H. Pruden presided at the August meeting of the Shirley branch of the League of Mothers. The Rev. A. W. Baxter gave an address on the sanctity of marriage, and was thanked by Mrs C. Cameron. Duets were sung by Mesdames D, Matson and R. Bell. Fourteen children were cared for in the creche by Mrs H. McDougall (New Brighton branch), assisted by Mesdames B. Walker, G. Walker, and I. McCulloch. The hostesses were Mesdames H. C. Biggs, R. Clark, and J. Campbell.
