SPORTS TOURNAMENT AT ASHBURTON
PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ ANNUAL COMPETITION A total of 248 players—ls2 Rugby players and 96 basektballers—took part in the Canterbury primary schools’ annual winter* sports tournament which began yesterday morning and will conclude at noon today. The games, which were played at the Domain Rugby grounds and on the Ashburton Basketball Association’s concrete courts, were marred by a gusty sou’-wester. After the first day’s games Timaru is the only team to win two matches in the open grade of the basketball tourney, while Christchurch and Ashburton A.have won one game each. In the under sft lin grade,-Ashburton A have two points md Timaru IJ. In the 6st 71b grade of the Rugby tournament, Ashburton and Timaru have 1J points, while Christchurch A have one. All four teams have one point in the Bst grade. Results of matches yesterday were:— Basketball.—Open: Timaru 9, Ashburton A 1; Christchurch 10, Ashburton B 6: Ashburton A 11, Christchurch 10; Timaru 21, Ashburton B 3. Under sft lin: Ashburton A 6, Timaru 6; Christchurch 13, Ashburton B 10; Ashburton A 16, Ashburton B 12; Timaru 9, Christchurch 5. Today, Ashburton A will meet Ashburton B, and Christchurch will meet Timaru in the open grade, and Ashburton A and Ashburton B will meet Christchurch and Timaru respectively in the under sft lin grade. Rugby.—Under Bst: Ashburton 9, Christchurch B 8; Christchurch 9, Timaru 5: Timaru 14, Ashburton 6; Christchurch B 10, Christchurch A 3. Under 6st 71b: Ashburton 3, Christchurch A 3; Timanu 3, Christchurch B 0; Ashburton 9, Christchuch B 8; Timaru 0, Christchurch A 0. Today, Ashburton and Christchurch A will play Timaru and Christchurch B in the fist 71b grade, and Ashburton and Timaru will meet Christchurch A and Christchurch B in the Bst grade.
