Johnny Globe and Denbry Impress In Race Trials

TROTTING

Among horses with engagements at the Grand National meeting which raced at trials held yesterday by the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association, Johnny Globe and Denbry were two of the most impressive. The National meeting will open at Addington tomorrow week. Track and atmospheric conditions were very good at Addington yesterday, and there was a surprisingly large attendance for the trials. Other horses engaged at Addington which showed that they are near their best were Brava, Dresden Lady, Hyperbole, Light Nurse, Slipstream, Black Douglas, and Caduceus. Brava and Gay Lyric, after being the leaders throughout the first heat of the 3min 16sec class pace, finished on solidly to finish second and first respectively. Gay Lyric, which is now being trained by his owner, C. A. Winter, at Belfast, broke at the start, but soon settled into his stride. He raced up to join Brava at the end of six furlongs. They were in front of Clontarf and Countermark at the straight entrance, with Kublai Khan, Roy Grattan. Johnny Globe, Excelsa, and Poranui all handy. Brava was not pressed over the last half-furlong, and Gay Lyric, running on strongly for his driver, J. G. Hampton, beat him by half a length. Brava was the more impressive of the pair, and he should do well at Addington next week. Johnny Globe, which had started from 60 yards, began brilliantly, but at the end of the first quarter he was steadied in the middle of the field. He remained there until will into the straight, and when shown a gap, he finished with a great burst for third, a length behind Brava. Star Rosa finished on for fourth, ahead of Young Charles, Countermark, Clontarf, Roy Grattan, and Poranui. Johnny Globe is in excellent condition. Gay Lyric, off the front mark, took 3min 15 3-5 for the mile and a half. Johnny Globe was timed to pace his mile and a half from post to post in 3min 8 2-ssec, the last half-mile in Imin 1 2-ssec. and the last quarter in 30sec.

Denbry’s Trial Denbry, which will meet Rupee and other high-class pacers in the Louisson Handicap tomorrow week, showed that he was back to his brilliant form of

last season, when he won the second heat of the 3min 16sec pace after being one of the leaders all the way. Consul and Lauder Hall were a little slow at the start and Denbry was the early leader. He was passed by Maori Queen before the field had gone two and a half furlongs. Denbry moved up to shade Maori Queen racing to the straight, with Au Revoir showing up on the outside of them. Ohio and Our Roger were just in behind them, followed by Lauder Hall and Brave Company (together), Onward, Consul, Thelma Globe, and Te Maru. Denbry did not have to do his best in the straight to win comfortably by a length. Au Revoir also pleased by the manner in which he ran on for second, a neck in front of Brave Company. with Our Roger, which was not hurried, holding on for fourth, two lengths back. Maori Queen, which has not raced for more than a season, held on for fifth, just ahead of Consul, Te Maru, Thelma Globe, Ohio, and On-

Consul, which has been entered for the August Handicap at Addington, is well forward, and he should make a bold showing. Burns Night started from 54 yards in this heat. He raced towards the rear of the field until near the final quarter, when he was eased right up. The U. Scott stallion is in excellent order, and appears to have done plenty of work. Off the front mark, Denbry paced the mile and a half in 3min 17sec, the last four furlongs in lmin 1 3-ssec, and the last quarter in 30sec. Caduceus in Form Caduceus, the leading three-year-old of last season, showed that he will be at his best for his engagements at Addington when he won the first heat of the 3min 23sec class pace. Starting from 36 yards, he tangled at the start, but soon settled into his stride. He raced up to be about sixth at the end of half a mile, and racing to the straight he was four out, not far behind the pacemaker, Real Class. He ran on in fine style to win by a head from Lodestar, which also raced promisingly. Caduceus was never far away and looked to have something in reserve as he reached the post. He will have bright prospects of winning a race at Addington. Real Class, which is now trained at St. Albans by his owner, C. McDonald, made a forward showing to hold on, for third, a head behind Lodestar. He did well to finish so close up after making the pace. Lucky last, which was a little slow early, finished on with something in reserve in fourth place, about three lengths behind Real Class. Silver Circle, Chandelier, Mighty Falla, Black Douglas, and Dourglo followed. Black Douglas was most impressive after breaking at the start. He Was

finishing on boldly after taking 2min 37sec for his last mile and a quarter, his final quarter in 3.osec. Caduceus paced the mile and a half in 3min 14 3-ssec, the last half in lmin 4 3-ssec. Tribal Song Shows Speed Tribal Song, which will race in the Heathcote Handicap at Addington tomorrow week, showed speed to win the second - heat of the 3min 23sec class pace. Tribal Song was a little slow early, but his driver took advantage of the slow pace to take control at the end of six furlongs. Tribal Song was travelling easily over the last bit, and he had a length to spare over Bronze Indian, at the post.

Bronze Indian finished on well, and he is in good order. He was a head in front of Red Chase, which showed speed after a slow beginning from 48 yards. Lady Jane, which had always been handy, finished along the rails to be a head back in fourth place. Cembala. Rowan Star, Sea Rover, and Midnight were next. Gay Heritage was allowed to drift early. She raced at the rear of the field all the way. She looks very well, and should be improved by the run. Two Wins N. L. Befkett produced Hyperbole and Lucky Spot to win both heats of the 3min 29sec class pace. Hyperbole was most impressive when he led almost throughout the first heat. He was running on solidly with three lengths to spare over Sandy River at the post, after taking 3min 16 2-ssec for the mile and a half, the last half-mile in lmin 3sec. Hyperbole looks an improved horse, and he should develop useful form this season. He is engaged in the Metropolitan Stakes on the second day at Addington. The three-year-old Dresden Lady impressed by the manner in which she finished third, half a length behind Sandy River. She will have prospects in the Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes tomorrow week.

Midday, after being a little slow early, finished on for fourth, ahead of Local Light, Double Talk, Slipstream, and Citronella. The two lastnamed horses were most impressive. Neither was asked for a serious effort, and they did well to finish so close up against the pacers. They will have good prospects of winning at Addington. Lucky Spot, after being handy to the pacemaker, Lynberne, in the middle of the second heat, finished on in the straight to beat Invicta by a length in the second heat, which was run at a slow pace early. The leaders took 3min 25 3-ssec for the mile and a half, the final four furlongs in lmin 4 4-ssec, and the final quarter in 30sec. ‘ Invicta, which is carrying plenty of condition, was running on at the post, a length in front of Arriba. Lynberne held on for fourth, ahead of Royal Minstrel, which broke early, with Easydale and Grattanello right up next, clear of Gay Lad, which was not hurried at any stage of the race. Unimpressive Field The horses in the 3min 41sec class trot were not particularly impressive. The event was won by Madam Grattan, which trotted the mile and a half in 3min 25sec. She started from 96 yards, and trotted solidly throughout. She was five lengths in front of Circlette, with a length to Barrayey, which had broken twice, and a head to Oaktree. Royal Marine, Superfortress, and Clarine headed the remainder. Light Nurse, a candidate for the Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes, pleased her admirers when she began smoothly in the race for qualified maiden pacers. She was not troubled to beat Super Light by half a length, with a length and a half to Humble Pie, and a length to Queen’s Coronet. Light Nurse took 3min 25sec for her mile and a half, and the last four furlongs took lmin 4 2-ssec. .
