POLLUTION OF SEA BY OIL
NEW ZEALAND TO SIGN CONVENTION (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 12. The Minister of Marine (Mr W. S. Goosman) today announced the Government’s decision that the international convention for the prevention of the pollution of the sea by oil should be signed on behalf of New Zealand. The signature would be subject to acceptance of the convention by the Government, and New Zealand would not incur any obligation under the convention unless an instrument of acceptance were later deposited. The Government did not consider that it would be opportune to take up that question for at least 12 months, he added. New Zealand, he •said, was fortunate that it had been little affected by the problem, but the Government recognised an obligation to co-operate with other countries in seeking a permanent solution.
