ASSAULT ON WARDER

PRISONER SENTENCED TO BREAD AND WATER (New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, August 12. An inmate of the Waikeria Reformatory was today- sentenced to bread and water for seven days by Mr S. L. Paterson, - S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court at Hamilton, for an assault on a warder. He is Charles Louis Douglas Hartley (Mr M. I. Minogue), who pleaded guilty. Counsel said that Hartley had already served six days’ solitary confinement for this offence. The Magistrate said that six days’ solitary confinement yras not sufficient punishment. In addition to the bread and water sentence, he ordered that Hartley be moved to a lower class in the prison.
