RHODES STREET RESERVE
Sir, —In 1946, when the City Council proposed selling the Rhodes street reserve, a petition signed by some hundred residents wa§ presented to the City Council by a deputation, protesting against the sale of this historic woodland area. A deputation was also taken to the Minister of Lands. Recently, in the papers and over the air, a plea was made for the replanting and preservation of native trees. This reserve is one of the few remaining areas within the city in which native birds are living and breeding in these well-established native trees. Mr Barnett says that this reserve is a liabilty. Well, nothing has been spent on this reserve for over seven years, while rent has been collected. I protest against a lovely wooded area of native trees belonging to the citizens being sold to be destroyed.—Yours, etc., CITIZEN. August 11, 1954
