PRODUCE FROM HOME GARDENS

COMPARISON WITH OUTPUT COMMERCIALLY (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 12. A suggestion in a report by the Minister of Housing (Mr W. Sullivan) to the House of Representatives that produce from home gardens in subdivisions encroaching on former market gardens, would exceed the loss of commercial production was described as a “ridiculous assumption” when the Dominion Council of Commercial Gardeners resumed its conference today. “A momen’s thought on the huge quantities of vegetables grown on the 400 acres of excellent land in the Hutt Valley -now used for housing is sufficient to demonstrate how meagre the production of household gardens is in relation to that previously obtained, said a report. “Account must also be taken of the higher cost of producing a given quantity of vegetables from the home garden than when it is produced commercially.” It was a Government problem, not one for local authorities nor one that directly affected present-day growers, said the report.
