IMPORTS OF TOMATO PULP
PROTEST BY NEW ZEALAND GROWERS (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 12. A strong protest was made during the year against the granting of licences for the importation of canned tomato pulp unless it was proved that local growers were unable to supply in adequate quantities, said the report of the executive committee presented at the conference of the Dominion Council of Commercial Gardeners, Ltd. It was considered that imports had been requested without any real attempt having been made to reach a satisfactory arrangement with local growers, said the report. Grapes from overseas and tomatoes from the Pacific Islands had been of the greatest value to the public while locally-grown supplies were not available, said the report. The Board of Trade had arranged that imported grapes should land to be sold in the early spring, but growers of glasshouse tomatoes in some cases had been adversely affected by Pacific Islands shipments. A request had been made to have shipments made so that they did not conflict with local supplies.
