SEATING FOR SHOP ASSISTANTS
REASONABLE PROVISION REQUIRED Reasonable and convenient seating must be available at all times for shop assistants, according to Section 10 of the Shops and Offices Act, said Mr P. M. Velvin, secretary of the Canterbury Amalgamated Shop Assistants’ Union yesterday. He was commenting on a letter printed in “The Press” last Saturday. in which a correspondent mentioned that some saleswomen looked “utterly weary,” Mr Velvin said the act provided that shop assistants should be allowed to use the seats, at reasonable intervals, and that dismissal or reduction of pay should not be made unless this privilege was abused. Years ago this had often been a point of dispute, Mr Velvin said, but shopkeepers now seemed reasonable in their attitude to assistants resting. There were various devices which provided small seats behind the counter without interfering with business.
