CANTERBURY CAR CLUB
PERMANENT CIRCUIT PROPOSED Gate collections amounting to £5lO were received by the Canterbury Car Club at a race held at Mairehau earlier this year, it was reported at the club’s annual meeting last evening. Prizes and trophies worth £468 were presented to successful competitors in the Mairehau race. The ownership of a racing circuit near Christchurch would greatly improve the club’s financial position, and also make the club independent of those who resisted the club’s use of the Mairehau circuit, it was said.
A motion proposed by .Mr B. H. Paton that the clubs should support the establishment of a permanent motorracing circuit of international standards in the region of Christchurch, was passed unanimously. Mr V. Blackburn said that such a circuit would need to be within 12 miles of Christchurch, otherwise it would be insufficiently patronised. Mr Paton said that the club was at present only supporting the circuit in principle. Members voted unanimously for proposals that those connected with motor sport in New Zealand should have .separate representation on the National Roads Board, the District Roads Councils. the Road Safety Council, and local road safety committees. It was estimated that about 3600 members of affiliated car clubs in New Zealand would be represented if these proposals were put into effect.
T,r O s cers elected were: patron, Mr C. W. F. Hamilton; president, Mr G. Drayton; vice-presidents, Mr H. Sedgelv and Mr R. Bailey; secretary, Mr A. R Barnsdale; club captain, Mr A.
