U.S. Denies Secret Agreement
WASHINGTON, August 11. The United States State Department today denounced as “standard Communist propaganda” the accusation by Dr. Otto John, the former West German counterespionage chief, that the United States is plotting a new war. A department press officer, Mr Henry Suydam, said Dr. John, who defected to Communist East Germany, merely said “what a man who finds himself in his position might be expected to say.” Commenting on Dr. John’s remarks, Mr Suydam added: “The United States has no secret agreement with the West German Government as part of the European Defence Community, looking toward a new' war in the East or elsewhere.”
