PHOTOGRAPHY AT UNIVERSITY
RESULTS OF SOCIETY’S COMPETITIONS When the Canterbury University College Photographic Society held its fourth annual exhibition, 43 monochrome prints and 46 colour slides were submitted for judging. In his comments, the judge (Mr F. L. Casbolt) said x the standard of the entries was higher than last year. The photographers were not bound too closely to the , conventional styles of pictorial photography. This showed a pleasing approach which was often stifled through too close adherence to the rules of composition. Mr Casbolt said there was a need for simplicity of line anc. the exclusion of extraneous subject matter. Colour, said Mr Casnolt, was an ideal r ecord medium, but some of the entries showed that the photographers Were also aware of the pictorial possibilities of colour photography. Results of the competitions were:— Open section: “Tough Days,” N. A. Griffith, 92 points, 1; “Agin’ the Guv’ment,” N. A. Griffith, 90, 2; “Snow Climb,” K. C. Wise, 87, 3.
