CONTROL OF SALE OF COMICS
SUPPORT FOR HOUSEWIVES’ UNION The Canterbury Housewives' Union, at its August meeting, received letters from three more organisations supporting the stand taken by the union for control of undesirable comics. They were the Society for Protection of Women and Children, the University Socialist Club, and a representative meeting of teachers and others interested in the teaching of reading and in children’s literature. It was decided to write more fully on this question to the Minister of Education (Mr R. M. Algie), the Minister for the Welfare of Women and Children (Mrs G. H. Ross), and the Leader of the Opposition (Mr W. Nash).
The union’s petition on the cost of living, supported by several hundred signatures gained in a short period of collecting, it to be sent to Parliament immediately. In discussion on the petition and the Budget, it was pointed out that an increase of 10s weekly had been granted to widows with children, for whom the petition csks that the mothers’ allowance be raised to £3 weekly. They are now receiving £2. The president (Mrs M. Adcock) said that as both last year’s and this year’s petitions had made a special plea for the widows, she felt the union had contributed towards gaining them a part of what the union was advocating.
