C. S. Donald Enters Six Horses For Addington

TROTTING

C. S. Donald, of Belfast, who last season prepared the winners of 13 races, has nominated six horses for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s Grand National meeting, which will open at Addington on Saturday week. They are Royal Marine, Father’s Wish, Lodestar, Jaunty, Brahman, and Loraine. Royal Marine, which will race against the trotters in slower-class races, showed fair form at times last season, when he gained one win and two placings from eight starts. At New Brighton last September, he beat Redale and’Sure Phoebe in the Shirley Handicap; and three weeks later, at Forbury Park, he finished a good second to the speedy Excellenza in the Eayfield Handicap. At his next appearance, he finished third to Factotum and Fingal’s Cave on the second day at Forbury Park.

A brother to the dual New Zealand Trotting Cup winner, Haughty, Royal Marine has shown plenty of stamina in some of his races and early this season he should win at least one race. Father’s Wish, which will race against the better-class trotters, showed her best form in New Zealand last season when she gained one win and two placings from five starts. She began the season by finishing a good third to Gold Horizon and Swanee River in the Christchurch Handicap at the Grand National meeting, and the next Saturday she beat all but Sure Charge in the Winter Handicap. After one further unplaced performance, she returned to her best to beat Ascot and the unlucky Highland Kilt in the Wishful Handicap at Oamaru in October. The Australian-bred Raider mare can both sprint and stay. If she is right back to her best, she will have prospects of extending her record at Addington. Lodestar’s Record

Lodestar, which last season developed into a particularly good horse, looks to be on the verge of high-class form. Since joining Donald’s team, he has had 11 starts for two wins and four placings.

His first win was at Blenheim in January when he beat Stylish Grattan in the Queen Elizabeth Handicap. His other win was not achieved until May 1 when, at Forbury Park, he gave a sterling performance to beat Air Command in the Pacific Handicap. That effort stamped Lodestar as being a pacer with better than average prospects of graduating to the best classes. He is a five-year-old this season and he should live up to his excellent breeding. He is by Josedale Grattan from Single Star, the dam also of Riviera and Petro Star. Jaunty, which is the same age as Lodestar, is another fine type of pacer. He gained two wins and two placings from six starts for Donald last season, and he had two wins and one placing from four starts when being prepared by his owner, B. Grice. Jaunty’s most recent success was in the Hawera Cun in which he easily beat the speedy Covrex after taking 4min for two miles. Jaunty can both sprint and stay, and this season he should develop worth-while form. Half-brother to Jaunty Brahman, a half-brother by Gold Bar to Jaunty, will be a candidate for the Metropolitan Stakes on the second day at Addington. Brahman, a brilliant but unreliable pacer, appeared to be more tractable towards the end of last season, but he still has a long way to go before he is a sound proposition. He has not raced with the best of luck so far. If Donald can make him begin smoothly, he will soon win his way to a tight mark. Last season, he gained two wins and two placings from 16 starts. His best effort was at the start of the season, when he failed by a narrow margin to beat Invicta in the Canterbury Three-year-old Stakes.

Loraine, which has yet to race from Donald’s stables, is another speedy but erratic pacer. Last season, from 16 starts, the Kingcobra mare gained three wins and three placings. All her wins were at Hutt Park, where she has given some smart performances.

In September she beat Win Again in the Pacific Handicap, and in November she beat Cherokee in the Electric Handicap. In February, she showed speed when she conceded Grand Monarch 12 yards and beat him in the Railway Handicap. Loraine has plenty of speed and stamina on her day, and Donald should not find it difficult to place her to advantage if she becomes solid. Won in Sydney

New Zealand-bred horses were again to the fore at the meeting held at Harold Park, Sydney, last Saturday evening. They won three of the seven races and recorded 11 placings. Scottish Bank, a half-sister to Scottish Brigade, failed to leave the mark in the opening race. Lillian Lavina (Jack Potts—La Lilly) finished a fair second to Strathfield Jack in the Second Qualifying Stakes. Lady Inchcape, Daredevil, and First Scott filled the placings behind the favourite, Para Rip, in the Trotters’ Handicap. All were solidly supported. Lady Inchcape started second favourite at 4 to 1. Golden Poise (Equipoise—Belle Globe), starting at 6 to 1, gained a decisive win over Sandy Walla in the Gosford Handicap. A New Zealandbred mare, Vivanti, a winner at her four previous appearances in Australia, was favourite at 5 to 4 on, but she could not handle the going, and finished eleventh.

When Vivanti’s owner-trainer, W. Picken, examined her teeth recently, he found a piece of wood embedded in the cleft of her mouth. The wood, which had been in her mouth for some time, had apparently caused her considerable trouble, and when it had been removed she hit out much more freely in her work. Lady Joss, starting at 20 to 1, finished within a length of the winner, First Test, in the Harold Park Handicap, with Scimitar, which started at 7 to 2, half a length away, third. Scutari, a brilliant two-year-old several seasons ago, made short work of his opponents in the Maitland Handicap. Starting at 8 to 1, he beat Shireen, with Defiance finishing on s for third ahead of Southern Blade. New Zealand-bred horses filled all four placings in the .Newcastle Handicap. Laura Hall, starting at 6 to 1, beat Beeline, which started at 8 to 1, by a short length, with a neck to Meg Mundy, which started at the same price. Eureka Scott, the joint favourite at 4 to 1, finished strongly for a close fourth ahead of Gracefield Gold. Hall Ace, Field Marshall, Amoroso, Willie Roger, and Grange Lady (last), all New Zealand-bred horses, failed in this race.

MORE IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED It was decided at a recent meeting of of the Waimate Racecourse joint grounds committee to level the shoulder at the end of the top turn of the track as soon as possible.Mr J. Corrigan said that this would give an indication of the type and scope of further banking work on the track, and would “put things in order for the trotting meeting later in the year.” Mr S. D. Vincent said it was essential to drain the tracks. The meeting decided to have the lips between the tracks removed, and to employ two men to locate and clear the drains, which were not shown in any ground plan. Other essential improvements •projected include the provision of photo-finish equipment and track mower, the rebanking of the track, and further painting. It was decided to appoint a permanent secretary. The retiring chairman, Mr Vincent, said he thought the periodical change and succession of chairman from the racing club and trotting club seemed to be satisfactory, but the interchange of club secretaries tended to throw work on to the shoulders of individual committee members. This work normally would be undertaken by a permanent Secretary, whose appointment would simplify the operations of the committee and the arrangements at the racecourse. Mr D. Keyes (trotting club) will be the new chairman. Tentative estimates, drawn up by the secretary (Mr J. Donaldson) for the year ending June 30, were discussed.

Trials at Addington The first race at the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association’s trials at Addington Today (Thursday), August 12, commences at 11 a.m. A collection will be taken in aid of the St. John Ambulance. Advt.
