LOCAL BODY MEMBERS

REVIEW OF RESTRICTIONS ON CONTRACTS (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, August 11. Legislation amending the Local Authorities’ Members’ Contracts Act would be considered by the Government, said the annual report of the Department of Internal Affairs, which was presented to Parliament today. For some time, it had been felt that the statutory provisions limiting the amount up to which a person could enter into contracts with a local authority of which he was a member was unduly restrictive, the report said.. A preliminary -examination of the position showed that it was probable that English legislation which merely provided for the disclosure of a member’s interest and his disqualification from voting in or discussing any matter in which he had a pecuniary interest became necessary because of conditions not experienced to the same extent in New Zealand, and that the complete removal of restrictions was not justified in the circumstances prevailing in New Zealand, the report said. However, a full investigation was being made.
