CYPRUS AND GREECE

Archbishop May

Be Prosecuted (Rec. 9 p.m.) LONDON, August 10. The Government of Cyprus is collecting evidence and planning to prosecute Archbishop Makarios, the Greek Orthodox Patriarch, who on Sunday defied the sedition decree and spoke for enosis (union with Greece) from a village church pulpit, a Nicosia correspondent of the “Daily Mail” reported today.

Archbishop Makarios ended his sermon with “Long live enosis,” and urged the congregation to join in a general strike which is planned to begin on Thursday. Archbishop Makarios revealed the text of a letter he sent to the British Colonial Office accusing the British of seeking “to drown the expression of Cyprus people of their desire for selfdetermination by terrorist methods recalling those used by fascist forces," the "Daily Mail” said.
