Mr and Mrs Spencer Rowley (Norfolk Island),, who have been visiting relatives in Southland, are now the guests of Mrs M. Johnson, Hereford street. They will leave Christchurch for the North Island on Monday. Mrs Neville Pownall (Nelson) is spending a short holiday in Christchurch, and is the guest of her cousin, M’ss D. Harkness, Salisbury street.

Miss Helen Buchanan, of Kinloch, Little River, who will leave New Zealand early next month by the Dominion Monarch for a trip to England and Europe, was the guest of honour at a very enjoyable party given yesterday by Mrs W. Tooniey at her home in Rhodes street, Fendalton. Miss Buchanan is a prominent member of the Christchurch Ladies’ Golf Club, and Mrs Toomey’s guests were for the most part officials and members of the club, who were given an opportunity of expressing good wishes to Miss Buchanan under very pleasant conditions. The guests, who included Miss Buchanan’s sisters, Mrs Gerald Anderson. Mrs Percy Hall, and Mrs J. B. Hay, greatly enjoyed the beauty of Mrs Toomey’s garden, with its colourful display of summer flowers.

The annual report of the Christchurch Cultural Society, which marks the thirty-second anniversary of the society’s foundation, notes that the membership during 1953 reached the record figure of 142. an increase of 11 during the year. It is reported that the high standard of the musical programmes and of the addresses .given at the monthly meetings had been, maintained, and the statement of accounts showed a slight increase in the credit balance

The Oxford Garden Club held its first annual meeting this week. There was a good attendance. The election of officers resulted: president, Mrs W. O. Chapman; vice-presidents, Mrs F. Gorton, Mrs H. R.
