CATERPILLARS

Sir, —This morning, on reading of the damage caused by caterpillars in the Wanganui area, I wondered if there was any connexion with the caterpillars in my garden. Over the last fortnight I have picked what should have been big .dahlias, but they had been eaten off and had a big brown caterpillar lying full length along what was left of the flower. This morning I went to pick some, and what I thought at first sight to be just buds I found on inspection to be only the tight centre of the flower, which had been eaten off. There was no sign of the grub, but several dark butterflies were flying about. —Yours, etc., DAHLIA. March 18. 1954.
