N.Z. PIPE BAND CONTEST

TEMUKA WINS DRUM MAJORS’ DISPLAY

(New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, March 19. In spite of a penalty of a point and a half for exceeding the time limit, the Temuka Pipe Band scored a meritorious win in the B grade drum-majors’ display at the New Zealand Highland pipe band contest at Carisbrook today. Temuka beat the other bands in this section in every movement, and completed the competition 17 points ahead, of Gore and Taieri, which tied for second place. The Scottish Society of New Zealand Pipe Band (Christchurch) won the B grade dress inspection at the oval. This band. and Temuka scored the highest points for drill (35), and were followed by Taieri (33). The winning band gained the maximum of 10 points for instruments—a performance equalled *by no other band. The Scottish Pipe Band of Dunedin gained 9.8 points in this section, and Taieri and Balclutha also scored well, with 9.4. Scottish (Christchurch) • topped the list for Highland dress with 9.9 points, Gore being next with 8.3. When the points were computed. Scottish (Christchurch) had 53.9 points, compared with Temuka’s 51.8 and Taieri’s 50.1. The major event of the daw was the B grade quickstep, in which seven bands competed. There was close competition, and all the bands will have a chance of gaining the aggregate prize after the test selection tomorrow evening. The quickstep scores will not be released until after the test selection. The A grade test selection was held this evening. Scores will not be announced until after the quickstep tomorrow.
