DISPUTE OVER LOTTERY
LIKELY RETALIATION BY TASMANIA MELBOURNE, October T2. Details of a • new Tasmanian State lottery—with New Zealand support—are expected to be announced soon if the efforts to prevent Tattersall’s from moving to Victoria fail. The Premier of Tasmania (Mr R. Cosgrove), who flew to Melbourne on Saturday night from New Zealand after discussions with the Prime Min-
ister (Mr Holland), yesterday had talks with the Victorian Premier (Mr J. Cain) in an effort to solve the lottery dispute. These were reported to have been abortive, but the two Premiers are expected to meet again. Mr Cosgrove is expected to announce the new Tasmanian lottery plan after his Cabinet has heard and discussed a report on his negotiations in New Zealand. It is believed in Melbourne -that New Zealand’s contribution towards the new Tasmanian consultation may be made by taxing all Tattersall’s investments in New Zealand, and by levying no tax on Tasmanian investments. Mr Cosgrove said yesterday that his New Zealand trip had been “most satisfactory.” Commenting on the application to the Tasmanian Supreme Court by the Clerks’ Union for an injunction restraining Tattersall’s from moving to Victoria. Mr Cosgrove said: “I think they will win it.” He added: “Not only is the Cabinet opposed to the Tattersall’s move, but the feeling among the general public is very strong against it.”
