TRUCE TALKS PROPOSAL

U.S. Reaction To Communist Plan (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright)

(Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK, Oct. 11. United Nations sources said tpday that the United States would probably agree to the Communist proposals for talks at Panmunjon to make arrangements for a Korean peace conference. The sources said that American acceptance would not in any way commit the United States to dropping its opposition to the Communist demand that the conference be expanded into a round-table affair by inviting India and other Asian neutrals to attend. On the other hand, they said, the opening of direct talks would at least remove the issue from the United Nations forum, and get the two sides one step closer to the peace conference which, under the truce agreement, is supposed to start on October 28. The South Korean President, Dr. Syngman Rhee, and the American Ambassador. Mr Ellis Briggs, met for one hour at Seoul today. Authoritative sources, said the Ambassador gave Dr. Rhee the American viewpoint on the Chinese Communist proposal that a meeting should be held at Panmunjon to discuss preliminary details of the proposed Korean Political Conference.

The United Nations Supreme Commander. General Hull will fly to Korea today, a South Korean spokesman said.
