TWENTY HORSES QUALIFY

TRIALS HELD AT ADDINGTON Twenty horses qualified to start in maiden races for pacers at the trials run at Addington yesterday by the Canterbury Owners’ and Breeders’ Association. The first four horses in each of the five heats, run over one mile and a half, had little difficulty in recording better than the required 3min 30sec limit. Most impressive of those to qualify was Reality, a three-year-old filly by U. Scott from Gallant Maid, the dam also of Crimea, trained at Prebbleton by V. Leeming for Mr P. Reid, of Hamilton. Reality was always handy to the leaders in her division and she came fan to win well under a hold from Dusky Diamond, with Provident at the head of the others. Reality’s 3min 23 3-ssec for the mile and a half could easily have been bettered, and she should develop useful form with more experience. Andy Peterson, a four-year-old gelding by Andy Derby from Ivy Peterson, owned and trained by C. L. Rhodes, was an impressive winner of the fifth heat. He was always handy and after leading into the straight he came on to win narrowly but well from Terowie, which showed speed after being slow early. The rest were beaten off. After the fifth qualifying heat, a trial barrier start was staged, with six horses on the front mark and five starting from a six-yard barrier. Two of the horses (one of them a trotter) broke at the rise of the barrier, but the rest of the field settled down to complete the trial without incident. MINERAL DIES

PROMISING. SOUTHLAND PACER “The Press” Special Service INVERCARGILL, Oct. 12. Mineral, which was probably the best class pacer in training in Southland at present, died yesterday. The Colossal gelding had been jogged by his trainer, J. A. Flynn, bjit before he had completed his work it was apparent that he was not well, and he died soon afterwards from what is believed to be an internal trouble. Mineral had made his first appearance for the new season at the Forbury Park meeting on October 3, when he ran a good race for sixth after being slow to begin. He was the outstanding pacer produced in Southland last season. On being taken over by Flynn half-way through the season, he won four races and was three times placed in eight starts, for £1330 in stakes. He established a Southland record of 3min 31sec for one mile and five furlongs, at Invercargill. Mineral was owned by Mr F. R. Forde, who had refused several substantial offers for him.
