AUSTRALIAN JET BOMBERS
“GRUELLING TESTS” IN RACE COMMENT BY FEDERAL MINISTER (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) CANBERRA, Oct. 12. The Federal Minister of the Navy and Air (Mr W. J. McMahon) said last night that the £50,000 spent by the Royal Australian Air Force to enter its Canberra jet bombers in the Lon-don-Christchurch air race represented a “bargain” price for the results achieved. Mr McMahon said: “That sum allowed us to put Australian-built jets through their most gruelling tests so far, and to observe hpw they would stand up to near war-time conditions. “It was only a quarter of the cost of one jet, and could have produced findings which would have spared us the loss of many times the money. One important thing the race proved was that Canberras could fly continuously for 24 hours and fulfil the conditions necessary for rigid flight control.” Mr McMahon said the two mishaps which befell the Australian Canberras —a blown tyre and a frozen nose wheel—were “quite extraordinary,"" and did not point to any basic faults.
