LETTER FROM CLASS II
GOOD WISHES TO PILOT
In his aircraft Flight Lieutenant R. L E. Burton, winner of the air race, brought two official letters. One was from the Secretary of State for Air (Lord de L’lsle and Dudley, V.C.), to the Minister of Defence (Mr T. L. Macdonald), and the other was from the Chief of Air Staff, Royal Air Force (Air Chief Marshal Sir William Dickson).
Most important to his nine-year-old daughter Alison her classmates in Class 2 at Houghton Central Primary School, is another letter which he will send by air mail to England this week. Four boys and girls—Barbara Seig 1, Roger Marples, Diana Murphy, and Alan Wilkinson —wrote on behalf of Class 2 wishing him well in the race and asking him to mail the letter back from Christchurch. “We are taking a great interest in the air race to New Zealand which takes place on October 8,” said the children’s letter. “We know that you are taking part in the race and as your daughter Alison is in our class we feel we have a very close interest | in the race. We would like to wish you a safe and good trip and hope you may win. We should be thrilled and proud if you would carry this letter with you on your trip and return it to us so that we will have a memento of your historic flight .
