ANNUAL BALL

TELEPHONE EXCHANGE STAFF

The annual ball of the Christchurch Telephone Exchange, which is well known for its friendly atmosphere and smooth organisation, was held in the Caledonian Hall last evening. It was attended by about 700 guests, including many from country districts. The ballroom was artistically decorated with large bunches of flowering shrubs, balloons, and humorous cartoons. Rainbow-coloured streamers were suspended from the ceiling and on the stage there were coloured telephones and a big illuminated telephone dial.

On arrival, each guest received a gift and a souvenir programme, which included an account of the history of the Post and Telegraph Department in New Zealand. During the evening Miss Kathleen Sweeney gave an exhibition dance.

Miss Patricia Livingston, winner of the. Christchurch section of the “Queen of the Air Race’’ contest, and the 35 other entrants, attended the ball after the judging ceremony. The guests of honour, who were received by the chairman of the ball committee (Mr H. C. Caldwell) and Miss M. McMullen, included Mr H. Pool (Chief Postmaster) and Mrs Pool. Mr L. O. Tyrrell (regional engineer) and Mrs Tyrrell, Mr W. J. Service (divisional engineer) and Mrs Service. Mr E. P. Sanders (equipment engineer) and Mrs Sanders, Mr R. H. Ogden (chief technician) and Mrs Ogden. Mr N. D. Facer (chief technician, construction) and Mrs Facer, Mr D. A. F. Smith (deputy-Chief Postmaster) and Mrs Smith, Mr F. W. Furniss (deputy-chief technician) and Mrs Furniss, Mr C. J. Simpson (superintendent, tolls) and Mrs Simpson, and Mr J. Stewart (telephone manager) and Mrs Stewart. Members of the committee responsible for the success of the ball were Mr Caldwell (chairman), Mr C. L. Harwood (secretary), Mr E. Cayless (treasurer), Miss McMullen, Mr P. R. Coote, and Mr H. Gough.
