The president of the New Zealand Student Nurses’ Association (Miss P. M. Bowden) left Wellington by air for Sydney yesterday to represent the association at a conference ci Australian nurses next month. She is a member of the staff of the Christchurch Public Hospital.—(P.A.) Mr and Mrs H. A. Allchurch, Miss Rhona Thomas, and Miss Noeline Leahy will leave by air today for Whangarei. They will judge at the annual New Zealand roller skating championships to be held there from September 1 to 5.

Mrs G. Grigg presided over a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Hororata Plunket Society. At the next meeting there will be a collection of eggs for Karitane. It was reported from the Hororata Red Cross that the appeal for the Greek earthquake funds had resulted in over £6O being collected. Mesdames P. Derrett and J. Locker were hostesses.

The August meeting of the Canterbury branch of the Federation of University Women was held at the Sign of the Takahe. There was an attend-' ance of 40, including friends and representatives of other branches of the federation. Preliminary arrangements were made for the visit of Professor Frances Moran, outgoing president of the Federation of University Women. Details of the next award of the New Zealand post-graduate fellowship and grants for study in the United States were also discussed.

More than 100 delegates from many parts of New Zealand will attend the inter-island officers’ conference of the Red Cross Voluntary Aid Detachment in Christchurch, during the week-end beginning October 2. The directorgeneral of the detachment (Mrs M. I. Hodgkinson) and the assistant directorgeneral (Mrs Wells) will be among the officers attending. The annual Dominion V.A.D. competitions in home nursing, first aid and marching, will be held in Christchurch at the same time as the conference.

The inaugural meeting of the Aranui Townswomen’s Guild was held recently in th«Aranui Hall. Mrs C. Plumridge, a dominion organiser, presided and outlined the history of the movement. Mrs R. Lake, liaison officer from Dominion headquarters, and representatives from sister guilds attended the meeting. Officers were elected as follows: —president, Mrs E. L. Collins: honorary secretary, Mrs C. Osborne; honorary treasurer, Mrs P. Buschl; committee. Mesdames A. Wilson, M. Innes. G. Sutton. C. Elies, R. Lindon. J. Ferras, F. Pheloung, G. Rogerson, F. Richards, G. Motz, and Miss A. Park. The hostesses were members of the Christchurch Area Federation. Three new members were welcomed by Mrs Burrows, who presided at the August meeting of the St. Martins Townswomen's Guild. Mrs A. H. Hammett outlined the work of the Friends of -the Hospital. Songs were sung by Mrs Grieve, for whom Mrs Richards was the accompanist. Mrs J. J. Mulligan presided at the August meeting of the garden circle of the Overseas League. An interesting talk on vegetables for the home garden was given by Mr L. C. Hurndell. Results of competitions were:— informal posy, A class: Mrs L. Smith 1, Mrs A. Manson 2, Mrs C. S. Brown 3.
