WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

Le Son’s Bay.—Miss Mould presided at the July meeting of the Le Bon’s Bay Country Women’s Institute. Three new members were enrolled. Competition results were:—best bloom: Miss Dalglish 1, Mrs Hewitt 2, Miss Mould 3. Something new from something old: Mrs Hewitt 1, Mrs Grant 2, Mrs Mould 3. Household jug of flowers: Miss Dalglish. The hostesses were Mrs Curry and Mrs Crotty. Mt. Pleasant.—Mjs W. E. Turland presided at the July meeting of the Mt. Pleasant Country Women's Institute. Three new members were welcomed. Sympathy was expressed with Mesdames Glasson, Miles and Roche in their recent bereavements. Members of the drama club presented an amusing sketch. A travel talk was given by Mrs McGregor Smith. Competitions were won as follows:—sweets in box, and sweets in novelty container: Mrs I. M. Gilmour. Victorian posy: Mrs Radcliffe. Members gave gifts for the Jubilee Home.

Ashley.—The monthly meeting of the Ashley Country Women’s Institute was held m the school, Mrs J. Sweeney presiding. Mrs Wilson gave a demonstration on making dolls of all nations and also displayed many samples of her work. Competitions results were:—best bloom: Mrs V. Fraser. Tomato sauce: Mrs Robertson 1, Mrs Hill 2. Preserved pears: Mrs Hill 1. Mrs Robertson 2. Something new from something old: Mrs Hill. The Peaks.—Mrs L. Hassall presided at the July meeting of The Peaks Country Women's Institute. The guest speaker was Mrs Tindall, of Hawarden, who gave an address on her experiences as a district nurse. It was decided to hold an evening social in aid of institute funds. A parcel for an institute in Malaya was dispatched, and also a parcel for the local Red Cross Society. Chocolate cake: Mrs Hewitt 1 and 2. Mrs L. Hassall 3. Springston.—Mrs J. R. Tyson presided over a large attendance of members at the monthly meeting of the Springston Country Women’s Institute. One new member was welcomed. A motion of sympathy was passed with those who had suffered bereavement during the month. Arrangements for the birthday party were finalised. The motto for the month was: “No woman is ever great by imitation.’* The roll call, “Cooking Mistakes I Have Made,” brought forth many amusing experiences. Mrs Tyson presented parting gifts to Miss N. Smith, a foundation member, who was leaving the district, and to Mrs W. G. Carter, and expressed regret at their departure. A competition was conducted by Mrs N. Buckley, and another was won by Mrs J. F. Blakemore. Members made a voluntary donation for the gift to the Queen for the restoration of Westminster Abbey. Gifts of knitting needles and material for fancy work for Malaya were handed in, and also periodicals for Korea. Monthly competitions results were as follows:—small bloom: Mrs C. N. C. Powell 1. Lincoln.—Mrs Shariff, of the Department of Agriculture, Malaya, gave an interesting report on women in Malaya and the forming of the Country Women’s Institute there, at the July meeting of the Lincoln Women’s Institute, presided over by Mrs R. Moir. A letter of thanks was received from, the Nurse Maude Association for the patch-work ouilt made by members. Millar, a member, who has just returned from a trip to her home in Scotland was welcomed back by Mrs Lemon. Mrs Hall of Southbridge was the guest speaker. A .good response for knitting and sewing materials for Malaya was received. Members were reminded of the Sales Table for Federation Funds at the August meeting.
