CHILDREN IN GREECE
APPEAL FOR HELP An urgent appeal for help for children in Greece, especially those affected by the recent earthquake, was made by Miss M. G. Havelaar. chairman of the Christchurch committee of the Save the Children Fund, at the monthly meeting yesterday. She reported that Mrs Millar, chief administrator for the Save the Children Fund in Greece, and a Greek girl assistant, had arrived in Ithea the day after the disaster and had opened a centre for the care of homeless and orphan children. A further appeal for immediate assistance for the survivors had recently been received from Countess Mountbatten. who is world president of the organisation. Because of the need for immediate aid gifts of money rather than clothes would be gratefully received. Miss Havelaar said. News received from the headquarters of the Save the Children Fund in London said that a further team of workers had arrived in Korea, and the first draft of nurses to work in a clinic for sick children left England by air for Pusan on August 21. In London an international committee had been formed with the object of launching a national appeal for furthering the work of the movement in Korea. Preliminary plans were made for sending Christmas parcels to more than 100 sick children, including many refugees in Greece and Europe. It was decided that each parcel would contain goods to the value of 10s. Miss Havelaar thanked members of the committee who had brought small soft toys to the meeting for the parcels, and announced that further gifts of toys or money from interested persons would be gratefully acknowledged. A report on the success of the recent doll dressing competition was given by Mrs M. B. Warren.
