AFFILIATION FEE UNCHANGED

LAWN TENNIS

PLAN FOR INCREASE REJECTED ANNUAL MEETING OF N.Z. ASSOCIATION (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 28. Auckland is the only major tennis association in New Zealand prepared to pay more for extra experience from overseas tours. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association last evening, Mr W. S. Spence (Auckland) advocated an affiliation fee of Is a player, of which 7d would be earmarked for financing overseas tours, but the meeting rejected the proposal. The present affiliation fee is 6d, of which Id is reserved for financing overseas tours. There are 40,000 tennis players in New Zealand. Though the majority of delegates at the meeting favoured the increase personally, they said they had been instructed to oppose it by their associations. Wellington and Canterbury already had serious court maintenance problems, and felt that the extra 6d on subscriptions would be “the final straw.” The affiliation fee for the coming season was again fixed at 6d. Future policy towards overseas tours was discussed by the chairman of the management committee (Mr A. H. Richards) in a report which will be circulated to district associations and considered again at the November meeting of the council. Mr Richards raised the issue of a regular interchange of visits between Australian and New Zealand junior players, and the number in such a team if one were sent. The entry of New Zealand into the Davis Cup competition was also discussed. Because of special circumstances, it apS eared that New Zealand might be able > send a two-man team away next year if that course were favoured, said the report. Negotiations were in progress for a visit by the United States Davis Cup team again next summer on the way to play the final challenge round in Australia, said Mr Richards.
