REFRIGERATED WAGGONS
SHORTAGE SAID TO AFFECT LOADINGS
RAILWAYS DEPARTMENT TO BE APPROACHED (From Our Own Reporter) TIMARU, August 28. The Timaru Harbour Board is concerned at the shortage of refrigerated waggons in the South Island and believes the shortage seriously affects the number of loadings that can be handled simultaneously at South Island ports. The board expressed this view in a motion passed at its monthly meeting this morning. The motion suggested that the Railways Department be approached in an endeavour to obtain adequate rolling stock to meet the full requirements for shipping frozen products overseas. It was stated that the Railways Department already had the matter in hand and that large contracts had been let overseas for rolling stock, including refrigerated waggons, but the board nevertheless decided to forward the motion to the department, to draw attention to the position in the South Island and to seek the prevention of complete,'or unbalanced, allocation of imported rolling stock to the North Island.
The matter will be discussed again at the Jiarbour board’s conference, which will open in Timaru on September 8.
