SOVIET FOOD FOR GERMANY
News Of Additional Supplies BERLIN, July 21. The Soviet Union is sending an extra 90,000 tons of food to East Germany in response to a request by the East German Government to the Kremlin, the official East German news agency, A.D.N., said today. Food additional to the quantities provided under the 1953 trade agreement between the two countries would be worth about £20,000,000, the agency said. The extra delivery will include butter. animal fats, vegetable oil, seeds, meat and cheese. Since the recent United States offer of about £5,000,000 worth of food to East Germany, the East German press has several times reported the arrival of large quantities of food from the Soviet Union. This is the first time, however, that the Government has made a statement about additional supplies from Russia. The East German Government rejected an American offer, adding that East Germany could feed herself with only Soviet help. AMERICAN OFFER RENEWED (Rec. 8 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Julv 20. President Eisenhower today renewed his offer to send food directly to Soviet-occupied Eastern Germany if the Soviet Union will reconsider its refusal of 10 days ago to permit distribution. In a letter to the West German Chancellor (Dr. Adenauer) today, Mr Eisenhower said the United States would continue to make clear to the Soviet Government that the offer of food was moved solely by humanitarian impulses. United States food shipments already are moving to Western. Germany for East Germans.
