AVONSIDE HIGH SCHOOL

TENDER ACCEPTED FOR NEW WING ADDITIONS TO OTHER SITES The Cabinet has approved acceptance of the tender of C. S. Luney, Ltd., for the erection of a new east wing at the Avonside Girls’ High School, according to advice from the Education Department received by the Christchurch Post-primary Schools’ Board of Governors last evening. The two-storey wing will have a dressmaking room and two kitchens on the ground floor, and shorthand and typewriting rooms above. The Cabinet decided that the provision of an assembly hall and gymnasium should be deferred. The Ministry of Works would be authorised to let a contract to heat the new wing and also improve the system in the existing buildings, said the letter from the Education Department. “What does ‘deferred’ mean officially?” asked Professor Jobberns, who is chairman of the Avonside board. The acting chairman (Mr K. A. Gough) said that, as the central board had approved the whole scheihe, including an assembly hall and gymnasium. Avonside could be assured that completion of the plan would not be forgotten. “They are going ahead with assembly halls for some intermediate schools. In a post-primary school, they are essential,” said Mr A. E. Caddick. It was also reported that drawings had been started for a new wing at the Papanui Technical College, to include five general classrooms, history and geography rooms, a library, administration offices, hall, ’ and music room. The department said this work had been delayed pending a review of the whole scale of accommodation for post-primary schools. Another acre and a quarter in Rose street has been acquired for the Cashmere High School, bringing the total to 25 acres. The board agreed that the school should be sited with the playing fields on the east. Two more sections totalling more than an acre and a‘ quarter have been acquired for the Aranui post-primary school site. . . A property at 11 Purdie street, is also being acquired as an addition to the Christchurch West High School.
