PREPARING FOR TRUCE
Concern Over Dr. Rhee’s Plans
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10.45 p.m.) SEOUL, July 21. Allied and Communist staff and liaison officers worked busily at Panmunjon today on apparent final arrangements for the Korean armistice, but again the shadow of South Korea’s President, Dr. Rhee, has fallen across the negotiations. Dr. Rhee is reported to be preparing a blunt public statement disavowing the reported assurances to the Communists by the chief United Nations negotiator, Lieutenant-General William Harrison, that South Korea would abide by the truce.
The South Korean Foreign Minister <Mr Pyun Yung Tai) said the Republic “may change its attitude” of not obstructing the armistice unless Dr. Rhee gets assurances from Washington as to the unification of the Korean nation. A highly-placed Government source who declined to be named said. Dr. Rhee is awaiting a reply from Washington on matters left unsettled in the conferences earlier this month with |he United States envoy, Mr Walter Robertson.
