ENGRAVING OF WAR MEDALS
GOVERNMENT POLICY CRITICISED
(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, July 21. Many former servicemen had not applied for their war medals because the medals had not been engraved by the Government, said the president of the Waikato Returned Services’ Association (Mr A. S. Playle) at a meeting of the executive committee of the association last evening. Concern was expressed that, in view df the forthcoming Royal tour, and the expressed wish that former servicemen and women should display their medals on this occasion, so few of those entitled to receive medals had applied for them. Medals earned in the service of one’s country should be greatly prized, Mr Playle said. It was most unfortunate that the Government had not acceded to the Returned Services’ Association’s request for engraving some years ago. It appeared now that the only solution was for former servicemen to secure their medals and have them engraved themselves. i
