CRIPPLED CHILDREN SOCIETY

MEETING OF CANTERBURY COMMITTEE Mrs L. W. McCaskill was welcomed as representative member for the Greymouth and Hokitika sub-branches at a meeting last evening of the general committee of the Canterbury and West Coast branch of the Crippled Children Society. She replaces Mrs F. W. Shallcrass. who has resigned. Mr J. J. Cuddon presided at the meeting. It wife reported that five of the branch’s cases had won eight prizes, including four first prizes, in the annual handwork competition organised by the Wanganui branch of the society. Letters of congratulation had been sent by the secretary to each child. Entries this year were heavy, and man v of the children had reached a high standard in craft work during long periods in hospital. A girl of nine won a first prize for lace-making. Transport activities during the last five weeks had been heavy, the report said. The van had made 426 trips covering 1372 miles (all in the urban area). The field officer had transported many children for treatments, to clinics, to the branch’s play centre and to their homes from swimming classes. She had covered 1022 miles. Visits to homes totalled 98, in addition to other visits to children in hospitals. Grants were passed for tutoring, and for assistance with payment for an artificial hand. Arrangements were completed for the annual meeting on August 12. Receipts included a legacy, and the final payment for the rag drive which ended in June. The 1953 drive realised £1238. PAPAL AUDIENCE FOR QUEEN SALOTE (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) ROME, July 20. Queen Salote of Tonga was received in official audience by the Pope yesterday. A company of the Pope’s Palatine Guard, in their early nineteenth century uniforms of scarlet and blue, presented arms with their oldfashioned muskets as, accompanied by her daughter, the Queen stepped from her car in the vast Damascus Courtyard of the Vatican Palace. The pueen spent 10 minutes with the Pope, who handed her a commemorative gold medal. Her daughter was also presented.
