SILENCE FIT FOR RICCARTON
IMPRESSIVE SPRINT AT WINGATUI
“The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN, July 21. Silence and Royal Tower, candidates for the Brabazon Handicap and the Winter Cup, were the most impressive performers at Wingatui this morning, when they galloped over six furlongs on the outside of the course proper. Silence had an advantage in the weights, which will be reversed when they meet at Riccarton. Botii horses worked well within themselves to finish on terms in Imin 22sec, the final three furlongs in 42 4-ssec. They a*e in splendid order for their engagements. They will leave for Riccarton on Thursday. C. McDonald will ride Silence, but no jockey has yet been engaged for Royal Tower. Gold Song (C. F. Thomas) completed his preparation for the Homeby Steeples with a sound school over eight steeplechase fences. His jumping was faultless. The Riccarton fences should not bother the Battle Song gelding, as he finished third to Bandmaster and Zealander in the same event two years ago. The trestles were well out on the track, which was cutting out after it thawed. A heavy frost delayed the trials until late in the morning. Rudolph broke away from the six furlongs and recorded Imin 9 l-ssec for the last five. The Brabazon candidate. Delayed, joined him going to the half-mile, and was galloping easily to finish in line with his companion after running the last three furlongs in 42sec. Rudolph’S effort was a good one for a hack. Lady Wanaka’s Trial Lady Wanaka safely held Kilmacrenan by two lengths at the end of a mile. From the seven furlongs the Royal Chief mare recorded Imin 44 3-ssec, the first half-mile in 56 3-ssec. Wait-a-Bit and Red Tinge were together, two lengths clear of Beeline, at the end of five furlongs in Imin 12sec, the opening two In 28sec. Peony Royal, which is engaged in the Brabazon Handicap, was not extended over five furlongs in Imin 16sec, and easily covered the last three in 45sec.
Penze (L. Smith), which will run in the Trial Hurdles on the first day of the C.J.C. meeting, was accompanied by Sir Hubert (L. Heeney) over two hurdles. Both gave dashing displays. Spanish Chief (G. W. Julius) and Paper Royal (C. F. Thomas)- showed improvement over a round of four hurdles.
