ACCIDENTS
CAR AND TRUCK COLLIDE MAN SERIOUSLY INJURED (From Our Own Reporter) GREYMOUTH, July 21. When a light truck and a motor-car collided near Kamaka, about 12 miles from Grey mouth, on the GreymouthReefton highway, shortly before 8 a.m. today, the two occupants in the truck were injured, one of them seriously. They were Thomas Hargreaves, of North Beach, Christchurch, and his niece. Mrs Myrtle Doreen Jones, of Dobson. The motor-car was • driven by Russell James Simonsen, of Blackball, who was travelling to work at Stillwater. _The collision occurred when the two vehicles attempted to pass a loaded Ministry of Works truck, which was parked on the roadside. The steering column of Mr Hargreaves's truck was snapped off by the force of the impact. Mr Simonsen was unhurt. Mr Hargreaves suffered severe injuries to the chest, apparently from the steering wheel, and slight head injuries and lacerations. His condition at Grey Hospital is serious. Mrs Jones suffered a fractured kneecap and slight head injuries. Her condition at Grey Hospital is satisfactory, TRAIN HITS VAN ON CROSSING (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 21. Mr Peter George, of Bay road, Kilbimie, today had both his feet severed when the van he was driving was hit by the south-bound Gisborne express. The accident occurred at the Paremata railway crossing at 6.55 p.m. Mr George was driving a light fish van and, according to a witness, the van appeared to stall as it reached the line. The engine of the express hit the front of the van.
