THE TRAINING OF NEW MEMBERS OF THE DOMINION’S POLICE FORCE.—Twenty-eight recruits to the New Zealand Police Force are attending the first course at the recently-opened police training school in Lyttelton, where these photographs were taken yesterday. (1) Sergeant E. J. G. Hotham, the instructor in charge, with Constable R. M. Carter, of Auckland (right), and Constable J. W. Me* Carrey, of Christchurch, who at ope time served in the Royal Ulster Constabulary and in the Palestine Police Force. (2) Physical culture, an important part of the syllabus. (3) A modified form of jujitsu, developed by Sergeant Hotham, is taught at the school. Here Constable C. J. Ribbens (middle), a former Port of London Authority policeman, and Constable Timothy McQuaid, from Belfast, Northern Ireland, are seen practising a wrist hold. (4) Relaxation during the lunch break.
