AGRICULTURAL PRIZE

SUGGESTION BY MR HOLLAND

LONDON, July 20. The Prime Minister of New Zealand (Mr Holland) has suggested agriculture as one of the five subjects for annual prizes worth 40,000 dollars each to be presented by the National Arts Foundation of New York along the lines of Nobel Prizes. Mr Holland is among several ‘ ‘public advisers” appointed to the foundation, it was announced in London tonight. The foundation was set up in New York in 1947 on funds subscribed by business firms, labour organisations, and other groups and private citizens. Donors, so far unnamed, will make available the prize money when the foundation is ready next year to announce the subjects. Meanwhile, leading citizens of many nations are being asked their views. Within the next four months the foundation will collect opinions from 20 European, Asian, and Eastern countries. :

The aim of 'the prizes will be to reward men whose work has been of outstanding service to humanity and thereby to show the peoples of the world who are their real benefactors. Scotch Whisky Exports.— Exports of Scotch whisky for the first six months of this year were the highest ever recorded, the Scotch Whisky Association reported today. Exports totalled 6,118,615 proof gallons, and earned £17,432,174 up to the end of June. The United States took 3,304,930 gallons. Next biggest customers in order were Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.—London, July 20.
