ATHLETICS

RECORDS CLAIMED BY SOVIET

HOP, STEP, AND JUMP MARK BETTERED (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, July 19. Leonid Scherbakov, of the Soviet Union, yesterday bettered the world hop, step, and jump record by one centimetre (about gin) with a leap of 16.23 metres (53ft 2gin), reported the Tass News Agency.

D. A. Silva, of Brazil, holds the official world record with his 16.22 metres, which won him the Olympic title in Helsinki last year. Scherbakov was runner-up in the Olympic Games. The Tass News Agency also claimed two world relay records by Soviet women athletes in Moscow today. In the 800 metres (four 200), Vera Kalashnikova. Zinaida Safronova, Flora Kazantseva, and Nadezhda Dvalishvila won in Imin 39sec. This was seven-tenths of a second better than the record set by a Soviet team in 1951, and equalled in London last September by a British team. In the 2400 metres (three 800 metres), Dora Zakharovich, Nina Cherkashek, and Nina Otko’enko returned 6min 35.65ec. This is 2.Bsec better than the time made in Kiev by a Soviet team last year, which is awaiting ratification by the International Amateur Athletic Federation.
