Sir Edmund Hillary said at Eskdale, Cumberland, today, that he hoped to start shortly on an attempt to climb Makalu—a 27,000 ft peak in the Everest Range. He said that he hoped some of his Everest companions would be in the new expedition. Sir Edmund Hillary and ’six other members of the Everest expedition have arrived at the “Outward Bound” mountain school at Eskdale, as guests of the warden, Mr Eric Shipton, who was the leader of former attempts on Mount Everest.
Sir Edmund Hillary said he hoped to do some rock climbing during his holiday. In London last night, autograph hunters mobbed the smiling Tensing, as he and his wife and two daughters arrived at the Indian Social Club for a dinner.
Tensing will return home today after a fortnight’s visit to London. Speaking at the dinner. Tensing thanked Britain and its people for the welcome they had given himself and his family.
