EUROPEAN ZONE FINAL

(Rec. 9 p.m.) COPENHAGEN, July 18.

Denmark and Belgium each won one of the opening two singles in the Davis Cup European lawn tennis final at Copenhagen today. Kurt Nielson, Denmark’s No. 1, who was runner-up at Wimbledon this year, beat Jackie Brichant. the Belgian No. 2 player, 6-1, 7-5, 3-6. 3-6, 6-3, in the first singles, but Phillipe Washer, Belgium’s leading player, squared the match by beating Torben Ulrich 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-1.

The same four players will contest the doubles match tomorrow, and the remaining two singles are due to be played on Monday.
