ESCAPE FROM PAPARUA

PRISONER RECAPTURED IN HAGLEY PARK A prisoner who escaped from Paparua prison about 8 p.m. on Saturday was recaptured about 9 a.m. yesterday in Hagley Park near the Christchurch Public Hospital. The prisoner is Anthony Errol Ivor Thrupp, aged 22 years. About four months ago Thrupp evaded his guard while waiting discharge from the Christchurch Public Hospital, where he had been undergoing treatment, and escaped. A few hours later he was recaptured at Waipara. Thrupp was disturbed In the park yesterday morning by Mr A. L. Burrows, an officer of the Magnetic Survey of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, which has its headquarters in the Botanic Gardens. Mr Burrows notified the police, and a police party quickly arrived. Thrupp made off as the police approached, but he was quickly overtaken, and offered no resistance. The police party consisted of Sergeant R. Turnbull and Constables C. Ching (driver) and D. Molyneux. When he escaped from custody on March 17 Thrupp was serving a sentence of two years’ imprisonment with hard labour on a number of charges including breaking and entering. Subsequently he was sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment, followed by two years’ reformative detention, on charges of escaping from lawful custody, house-breaking, and mischief.
