(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, July 18. The reigning world champion of motor racing, Alberto Ascari, driving a Ferrari, won the sixth British Grand Prix at Sliverston, Northamptonshire, today at a speed of 92.97 miles an hour. Second place went to J. M. Fangio (Maserati) at an average speed of 92.43, and third to G. Farina (Ferrari).

All the first six cars were Italian. British cars were overshadowed in the race, which developed into a struggle between the Italian Ferraris and Maseratis.

Ascari led from the start, and on his second lap set up a new course record time of Imin 51sec, equivalent to 94.93 miles an hour. Two laps later he did a lap in Imin 505ec—95.79 miles an hour. Gonzales, who finished fourth, later equalled this in a Maserati. The first British car to finish was a Connaught driven by Prince Bira of Siam, who took seventh place. Mike Hawthorn, the British member of the Ferrari team, lost his chance in the race when he had to .make a stop of nearly two minutes at the pits because of a fuel leak. He finished fifth.
